Spain holiday home insurance explained
One of the biggest things that many holiday home owners don’t realise is that insuring a holiday home is not exactly the same as insuring the property you live in for most of the year. This is especially true with overseas properties. If, for example, you have a second property in Spain then maybe you should be looking at your Spain holiday home insurance options in more detail.
It doesn’t matter if you’ll rent your property out or simply use it yourself for your own holidays, you may find that trying to get away with a standard buildings and contents policy could end up leaving you out of pocket if something goes wrong. Apart from anything you could be living in another country — you’ll hardly be on the spot to deal with a drama that could well turn into a crisis without the right cover to back you up.
The fact is that insuring a home in Spain brings with it a lot of different terms and features to think about. You may also find that some overseas property insurance policies don’t work in quite the same way as you are used to.
So, for example, you may need to check that any Spain holiday home insurance policy you take out covers all of your property. In some cases, such as if your home has a pool for example, you may need to have this insured separately with a basic policy. In some cases, you may also find that you don’t get as much cover with a Spanish policy as you would with a UK one.
Many people who own holiday homes in Spain will simply opt to take out a UK based policy. These policies will still be targeted at Spain holiday home insurance but they may be simpler to put into place and to understand. You may, of course, look to take out a local policy if you prefer. But, if you do this, you may also need to hire a translator to make sure that you understand all cover levels, terms and conditions before you proceed. Even if you are fluent in Spanish, insurance legalese may be beyond your language skills.
