Using Your Mobile Phone Abroad

Having a mobile phone offers a nice easy way to stay in touch with people while you’re travelling, but international calls can cost quite a lot, so it’s important to know what questions to ask your provider about international roaming and how to get the best deal from them to avoid a horribly expensive phone bill. It’s also important to think about phone security too.

The first thing you’ll need to do, is make sure you have international roaming enabled on your phone. This can take 3 weeks to be set up and has to be done while you’re in the UK so you’ll need to plan ahead for it. You will also want to ask them what the tariff costs for the international roaming services are in the locations you’ll be visiting as these can vary. Also, you must check whether your handset will work abroad – not all phones work in all countries!

Check to find out if you’ll be charged when you receive calls, texts or data downloads when you’re abroad as well. The EU Roaming Regulations mean that if you’re travelling within the EU, there is a limit on the charges you can run up for data roaming this is 50 Euros, but you can talk to your service provider about a different limit if you wish.

Getting the best deal from your provider could mean looking at a fixed cost monthly package that offers lower costs for international roaming. If you travel regularly or for extended periods, then this can be much cheaper than just sticking with your regular package and paying the extra fees on top.

If you’re going to just one country it could be worth looking at buying a SIM when you get there and using that instead for calls. It would work on that country’s network, and can be topped up as a pay as you go phone would be.

Do make certain you know how to top up your calling credit while you’re abroad – this could involve checking with your provider, or buying vouchers in advance to carry with you.

Make a note of your mobile phone’s serial number the IMEI number as well as your mobile phone number and the number of your service providers customer service (including code for dialing in from outside the country). Keep these somewhere safe but separate from your phone. This way if your phone is stolen, you still have them and can call your provider to get your phone blocked.
